Wong on MLB’s Futures Game

Wong on MLB’s Futures Game

Kolten Wong has been selected to play in the prestigious All-Star Futures Game, which is part of Major League Baseball’s All-Star week.

The Futures Game pits U.S. all-stars against World all-stars on July 8 at Kansas City, Mo. The game will be broadcast on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and followed live on MLB.com’s Gameday.

There are 31 players on MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects list on the two rosters. Wong, a second baseman in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, is No. 91 on the top 100 list.

Wong, in his first full season of pro ball, was also named to the Texas League All-Star game, which will be held June 28 at Tulsa, Okla. He’s at the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate in Springfield, Mo.

“I was speechless,” he said on MLB.com. “This is only my first year. To get the chance to play in the Futures Game, I don’t know if a lot of guys do that. For me, it was a big step and something I always wanted to do. To do it as early on in my career, I’m super excited.”

On Tuesday, it’s Waiakea High School baseball night, honoring the Division I state champions. Head coach Kevin Yee and his team will be at the park early to sign autographs, before and during the game. The Stars will honor the Warriors with a program at 5 p.m. The game’s probable starters are Ronnie Loeffler and Maui’s Eri “Knuckle Princess” Yoshida.

Brostek earns Gatorade honor

Shane Brostek, a recent Hawaii Preparatory Academy graduate, was named the 2011-2012 Gatorade Hawaii Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He’s the first to earn the honor from HPA.

The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track. Brosteck is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award.

The 6-foot-3, 283-pounder captured the state championship in the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 7.25 inches. Brostek also placed fourth in the discus at states, launching it 159’9”. He maintained a 3.71 grade-point average, and donated his time as a youth football and track instructor.

“Shane Brostek has just been tremendous all four years,” said Bob Martin, head coach at rival Ka’u High. “He’s special on the throws, as he showed at the Punahou Relays. People don’t understand what kind of impact the throwers have on a team. If he doubles or goes 1-2 in the shot and discus, that’s 18 or 20 points. He can make or break a team.”

Brostek signed a national letter of intent to compete on a football scholarship at the University of Washington this fall.
